I began editing, styling and purchasing book and journal illustration artwork in the era of drawing boards and Rotring pens. At Academic Press, I learnt about the technology of engraving, which was soon to become redundant. At George Allen & Unwin, I edited, styled and purchased sets of illustrations. Since those times, most artwork preparation has become computerised, but even the most sophisticated artwork software needs a human input.
